Heart Health and Strength Training - They're Not Separate

Cardio isn't the only thing that supports a healthy heart. Here's how strength training fits into the picture too.

There's a common assumption floating around that cardio is for heart health and strength training is for muscle and aesthetics - as if the two belong in completely separate categories. One's "for your heart," the other's "for your body." It's a tidy split. It's just not one the research actually supports.

What strength training does for heart health

Regular resistance training has been shown to improve blood pressure, support healthier cholesterol markers, and improve insulin sensitivity. These aren't side effects of getting stronger - they're direct, measurable contributors to cardiovascular health. Your heart isn't just along for the ride while your muscles do the work. It's part of what's actually improving.

Why this matters

A lot of people choose cardio exclusively because it feels like the more "responsible" choice for their heart, and strength training gets pushed to the side - treated as optional, or as something you do once the "important" cardiovascular work is done. The problem is that skipping it means missing out on benefits cardio alone doesn't fully provide, particularly around insulin sensitivity and long-term metabolic health. If heart health is the goal, leaving strength training out of the equation is leaving real ground on the table.

It's not either/or

This isn't an argument against cardio - walking, running, cycling, swimming, whatever moves you regularly, all have genuine cardiovascular benefits of their own. This is a case for including strength training alongside it, as a real part of a heart-healthy approach, rather than treating it as a separate, optional, purely cosmetic pursuit.

The practical takeaway

You don't need to overhaul your routine or pick a side. A combination of both, even modestly, covers more health bases than either one alone. Two to three strength sessions a week alongside some form of regular movement is a solid, sustainable foundation - not because it's the most intense option, but because it's the one you can actually keep doing.

If you've been treating strength training as separate from your health goals rather than part of them, that's exactly the kind of thing we build into every program at B.Evolved.
