The Recovery Habits That Matter More After 40

Training hard is only half the equation after 40. Here's what recovery should actually look like.

One of our clients told us last month: "I'm training the same as I did in my 20s - so why does everything take longer to bounce back from?" That's the most common thing we hear from anyone over 40 still training like they used to.

Why Recovery Needs More Attention

Muscle repair and hormone regulation naturally slow down with age. That doesn't mean training stops working - it means the same training load needs more recovery time to produce the same results. What used to bounce back overnight might now need an extra day, and that's not a sign anything's wrong. It's just a different set of rules for the same effort.

What Actually Helps

Recovery isn't complicated, but it does need to be intentional:

  • Prioritising sleep. Sleep is when most of the actual repair work happens - it matters more here than almost any other single factor.

  • Spacing out high-intensity sessions. Back-to-back hard sessions don't leave enough time for the adaptation to actually happen.

  • Treating rest days as part of the program. A rest day isn't time off from training, it's the part of training where the results actually get locked in.

The Common Mistake

When results slow down, the instinct is often to train harder to compensate. After 40, that usually backfires - leading to injury or burnout rather than progress. More effort doesn't fix a recovery problem. It usually just adds to it.

The Simple Fix

Two to three well-structured strength sessions a week, with proper recovery between them, consistently outperforms five rushed ones. It's not about doing less because you're older. It's about training in a way your body can actually absorb and adapt to.

If everything's taking longer to bounce back from lately, that's not a sign to push harder. It's a sign to build recovery into the plan on purpose.
