Strength Training Through Perimenopause: What Actually Helps

Perimenopause changes how your body responds to training. Here's what actually helps, without the overwhelm.

Perimenopause brings real, physical changes that affect energy, recovery and body composition. Training doesn't need to get more extreme to work with these changes - it needs to get smarter.

Why Strength Training Matters More Now

As oestrogen declines through perimenopause, it affects muscle mass and bone density - two things resistance training is one of the most effective tools for protecting. This isn't about chasing a certain look. It's about maintaining strength, function and independence through a stage of life where your body is naturally working against both.

The muscle and bone you build (or hold onto) now becomes the foundation for how you move, recover and feel for decades to come.

What Actually Helps

A few things make the biggest difference, and none of them require overhauling your life:

  • Protein at each meal. Muscle needs the raw materials to repair and maintain itself, and getting enough protein consistently across the day matters more than any single "perfect" meal.

  • Consistent strength sessions. You don't need to train every day - two to three solid sessions a week, done consistently, is enough to protect muscle and bone over time.

  • Real recovery between sessions. Pushing through fatigue doesn't build resilience during this stage, it just adds stress on top of stress. Recovery is part of the work, not a break from it.

What Doesn't Help

More cardio isn't the answer, and neither is cutting calories further. Both can actually make common symptoms - fatigue, poor sleep, low energy - worse rather than better. If you're already feeling depleted, adding more output and less fuel tends to compound the problem, not solve it.

The Mindset Shift

This isn't about fighting your body. It's about training with what it needs right now. Perimenopause isn't a malfunction to override with more effort - it's information. Your training should respond to that information, not ignore it.

The goal isn't to train like you did in your twenties. It's to train in a way that actually works for the body you're in now.
